What to Expect

Seeing a psychologist for the first time might feel intimidating, and knowing what to expect can help.

How to Book:

 

 

  • Select the session type you would prefer, either telepsychology (videoconference) or in person

 

  • If you would like to speak with me before booking to ensure that my services will be a good fit for your needs, please call me at (902) 702-2847 for a brief telephone consultation.

 

  • Not comfortable booking online yourself? Please call me at (902) 702-2847 and I can book your initial session for you. 

 

Completing Intake and Consent Forms:

 

  • After booking, you will receive an email prompt to complete the intake and consent forms online prior to your session.

 

 

First Session:

 Arrival for In-Person Session:
Please arrive promptly, but not more than 5 minutes before the start of your session. Make yourself comfortable in the Business Center waiting area until Dr. Grant comes to meet you.

How to Join Your Telepsychology Session:
You may join your videoconference session either by email appointment reminder or through your Janeapp booking account. The most up-to-date version of Chrome is recommended. Please ensure that you are using a secure and fast internet connection and are in a private location. You are required to be physically in Nova Scotia at the time of your session. 

Session:
We will start with a review of the confidentiality and privacy information. You will also have a chance to ask questions before we begin.

In the first session or two, I will get to know you better by asking you about:

  • Your current situation (e.g., relationship status, children, and current job)
  • The concerns that led you to seek psychological therapy
  • Any medical conditions you might have
  • Your current medications
  • Your previous experiences with psychological therapy
  • Any family history of mental health concerns
  • Your personal history, including experiences growing up, and your education, work, and relationship history
  • Your current lifestyle, including daily routines, hobbies, and whether you use alcohol or drugs
  • Your strengths
  • Your goals for therapy
It’s okay if you are not ready to share certain personal information after just meeting me. You set the pace. Then, together we figure out a plan for moving forward.
